Living Wisely Event Recap and Videos
At our recent Living Wisely seminar and luncheon, Protecting You and Your Loved Ones from Wildfires, we brought together experts from CAL FIRE, C3 Insurance, and All Risk Shield. The event featured three presentations that addressed wildfire behavior, emergency planning, home hardening, and the evolving insurance market — offering helpful tips to safeguard your family and property.
1. Understanding Wildfire Behavior and Emergency Preparedness
Speaker: Captain Robert Johnson – CAL FIRE/San Diego County Fire
Captain Johnson opened the seminar with a detailed overview of wildfire dynamics and the critical importance of proactive planning. He emphasized that fire season is no longer confined to summer months, noting low rainfall has left fuel across San Diego County exceptionally dry, increasing wildfire risk. Captain Johnson explained how topography, fuel, and weather interact to influence fire behavior, noting steep slopes and high winds can accelerate fire spread dramatically.
Key takeaways:
A key takeaway was the importance of defensible space and home hardening. Captain Johnson outlined the three defensible space zones — Zone 0 (0–5 feet), Zone 1 (5–50 feet), and Zone 2 (50–100 feet) — and stressed the need to remove dead vegetation, maintain irrigation, and avoid flammable landscaping like bark mulch and Italian cypress. He also urged attendees to prepare go-bags in advance, keep vehicles fueled, and have multiple evacuation routes that don’t rely solely on cell phone navigation.
Emergency alert systems such as PulsePoint, Genasys Protect, and WatchDuty were discussed, with Captain Johnson recommending Genasys Protect as the most immediate and reliable source for evacuation orders. He concluded by encouraging community engagement through Fire Safe Councils and ReadyforWildfire.org.
2. Insurance Strategies for Wildfire Risk
Speaker: Matt Clark – Partner, Personal Lines, C3 Insurance
Matt Clark’s presentation focused on navigating the complexities of homeowners insurance in high-risk wildfire zones. He began by explaining the shift in the insurance market, with many carriers moving toward excess and surplus lines due to increased wildfire claims. Matt highlighted the importance of understanding your policy’s details, especially coverage limits, actual cash value versus replacement cost, and loss of use provisions.
Key takeaways:
Matt advised attendees to build strong relationships with their insurance agents, noting that personalized service can make a significant difference during a crisis. He also warned against relying on call center-based carriers and stressed the importance of regular policy reviews, especially for homes in areas like Rancho Santa Fe.
A major concern discussed was the FAIR Plan, California’s insurer of last resort. Matt explained its limitations and encouraged homeowners to explore wraparound policies to cover gaps in coverage such as water damage and theft protection. He also touched on the impact of aerial inspections and roof maintenance on policy renewals, urging homeowners to keep their properties well-maintained to avoid cancellations.
3. Home Hardening Measures
Speaker: Danny Aaron – Director of Operations, All Risk Shield
Danny Aaron closed the seminar with a presentation on home hardening to prevent catastrophic loss of your home in the event of wildfire. Drawing from his background in wildland and structural firefighting, Danny emphasized the importance of ember-resistant venting, gutter guards, and non-combustible fencing and decking materials. He explained how embers can travel up to a mile and ignite homes through vulnerable entry points like attic vents and soffits.
Key takeaways:
Danny discussed the process of retrofitting homes to meet California’s fire safety standards. He noted insurance carriers are beginning to offer discounts for homes with approved hardening features. He described several certified home vent products, including BrandGuard and Vulcan.
Beyond structural upgrades, Danny highlighted the role of private fire mitigation firms like All Risk Shield, which offer risk assessments and emergency response services. He also addressed the use of fire-retardant gels, sprinkler systems, and pool pumps, cautioning homeowners to consult professionals before investing in these systems.
